Making decisions and managing your energy

Hi Mamas,

I have been reading a lot about energy recently. What it is, where it comes from, how it affects everything we feel and do. We have a certain amount of physical and mental energy each day, which we have talked about before in the form of decision fatigue. If you missed that email or don’t remember, decision fatigue is the concept that we only have the bandwidth to make a finite number of decisions per day. Once we become aware of this, we understand why at 5pm we stand in front of the fridge wondering what to make for dinner and why our brain is unable to give us an answer we’ve all been there.

This is why meal planning in advance for the week removes the need for this decision each day. When we make small changes and advanced plans in multiple areas, we can remove the need for smaller less urgent decisions throughout the day, which free up our brains for the important decisions on the daily.

Now we have refreshed on that concept, let’s discuss my new discovery - we do not have the same level of energy each day! Duh. If I had considered this, I would have realised this makes perfect sense. With this awareness, when we moms have our “less productive” days, which for the remainder of the human race would be equivalent to running for President, we can feel less guilty!

It took me a long time and a lot of personal growth to be ok with less productive or lazy days. I can get frustrated when I don’t feel 100% and can’t go at the speed I am used to in order to accomplish what I planned for the day. Now I know it is because on some days, I simply don’t have the energy levels. Once we become aware of our levels on any given day, we can get things done - or not - according to what our mind and body is capable of that day, rather than any grandiose plan we may have had.

It is good to recognize which tasks are high energy and which are low, both physically and mentally. On low energy days, high energy tasks can be shelved for tomorrow. I will do lower energy tasks on the low energy days, which means I am still accomplishing while also listening to my body.

Our energy fluctuates with our hormones, as well as with the weather and with the amount of sleep and good nutrition we are getting. When we are flat or lethargic, this is our body’s way of saying it needs a minute. To reset, to rest, to be still. When we are foggy and can't concentrate, this is our mind’s way of saying the same thing. Celebrate the next time you notice your mind or body telling you this, and do yourself a favor and listen.

As always, a pause may seem counterintuitive but it always results in increased awareness, productivity, energy and focus.

So, let's take some time to Be this week Mamas.

Have a great week.
